Jan Truyens works and lives in Ghent, Belgium. As a cook for pay, and an occasional illustrator and comic artist for pleasure. He started making paintings in 2020.

His work is about vulnerability and transience, its relation to the threatening and the hopeful. Snapshots layered with contradictions, hostile and benign, playful and dramatic. Soft shapes counter hard shapes, horror opposes humor. Texture and grit obtained by scraping and scratching until underlying layers reappear like trauma. About growing (up) and coping and not going mad, or maybe going completely mad and reaping its benefits. It is an ever changing story of an observer trying to figure out the world.
